PRECO Announces Teen Winners Of Washington DC Youth Tour Contest
Two 11th grade students from Peace River Electric Cooperative’s (PRECO) service territory will participate in a week-long, all-expense-paid tour of Washington, DC, in June, in addition to receiving a $500 college scholarship. The contest was offered to students at 16 selected high schools in PRECO’s 10-county service territory (Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Hillsborough, Indian River, Manatee, Osceola, Polk and Sarasota). Winners, Anna Armijo, Fort Meade Middle-Senior High School, Fort Meade; and Paulina Mazewska, North Port High School, North Port, will attend the Washington DC Youth Tour along with 1,500 students from electric cooperatives around the nation. Students were required to write a short essay and submit an application. The faculty of each high school chose one student to represent their respective school in the final selection process. Student essays were judged at an out-of-state electric cooperative. The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), headquartered in Washington, DC, has coordinated the Youth Tour program for over 40 years, sending high school students to visit the nation’s capitol. The purpose of the Youth Tour Program is to educate young people about the history and development of rural electrification and promote a better understanding of the value of rural electric cooperatives and their importance in the economic development of rural areas. Armijo and Mazewska will also learn how our system of government functions as they meet with legislators on Capitol Hill and visit many area points of interest, such as the White House, National Cathedral, Washington Memorial, Holocaust Museum, numerous war memorials, and much more. PRECO’s support of students is one way of giving back to the communities it serves.
